My Current Hair Care Routine

My Current Hair Care Routine

You know how they say that sometimes you want what you don’t have? Well for me growing up, I always felt that way when it came to my hair.

I desperately wanted curly hair because I thought my naturally straight hair was boring.

But over the years, I’ve come to embrace my straight hair and have even discovered products to make my natural hair the best it can be.

Even though I still love to add loose curls to my hair when I’m filming or going out, taking care of my straight hair is important to me, so today I thought I’d share my current hair care routine.

From the straight hair shampoo and conditioner duo that I’ve recently fallen in love with to the in-shower treatment I’ve used for years, these are some tried and true favorites that I’m excited to share.

Current Straight Hair Wash Routine:

1. Shampoo and conditioner:

Test washing your hair daily and every other day and take note of which one feels best to you. I currently wash my hair pretty much every day, but I did every other day for years before that.

Look for gentle shampoos or shampoos designed for straight hair like this one from V&Co.

2. Hair mask or treatment:

  • Hydrating Masks: Choose a hydrating or reparative hair mask 1-2x a week and apply it from mid-length to ends, leaving it on for about five minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

  • Hair Treatments: In addition to hair masks, I also like hair treatments 1-2x a week like the amika Smooth Over Frizz Fighting Treatment. This product feels more like a luxe oil than a mask and only needs to sit on hair for one minute before you rinse it out.

3. Clarifying scalp scrub:

Use a scalp scrub once a week or as needed to remove dead skin cells, product buildup, and excess oil. This promotes a healthy scalp and encourages hair growth.

Gently massage the scrub into your scalp using your fingers or a scalp massager. Move in circular motions around your scalp and then rinse thoroughly.

Current Straight Hair Care Routine:

1. Prep before hot tools with heat protectant:

I need to be better about remembering to do this, but always apply a heat protectant spray or serum before using any hot tools like straighteners or blow dryers.

These will help shield your hair from high temperatures and reduce the risk of heat damage.

Distribute the product evenly on hair spraying from the middle of the strand to the end and brushing through to avoid buildup by your scalp.

For a sleek blowout, I love the IGK Good Behavior Spray.

2. Dry your hair:

  • Towel drying: Gently squeeze out excess water from the shower and wrap hair in a microfiber towel to minimize frizz and speed up drying. The Aquis hair towel is officially now a product I can’t live without.

  • Blow dry brush: If you’re in a rush and need dry hair stat, try using a blow dry brush to style and dry your hair simultaneously. This tool means less to juggle and can reduce the overall drying time.

3. Keep it sleek:

After drying hair, avoid frizz and get silky, smooth hair with your preferred styling product:

  • Shine spray: After styling, use a shine spray to give your hair a glossy finish. Hold the spray at arm's length to distribute it evenly without weighing your hair down and gently brush through.

  • Hair oil: For added nourishment, apply a few drops of your favorite hair oil to the ends of your hair. This can also help tame frizz and nourish strands. My current favorite is one from Verb.

Other straight hair care tips:

Trim your hair:

Schedule regular haircuts ideally every 3-6 months to prevent split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and to help prevent split ends and damage.

I typically ask for face-framing pieces when I get my haircut to add more dimension to my hair.

Get a lifted look:

Use volumizing products like shampoos, conditioners, and root-lifting sprays to add body and fullness to straight hair.

Opt for lightweight formulas that won’t weigh your hair down, and consider blow-drying techniques that enhance volume like flipping your hair upside down or using a brush attachment.

Replenish moisture:

Hydrate your hair with deep conditioning masks and oils to keep strands soft and shiny.

Apply a rinse-out mask 2-3 times a week in the shower and use a few drops of hair oil on the ends to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.

Drink water:

Drink plenty of water daily to keep your hair hydrated from the inside out. Proper hydration supports overall hair health.

Nighttime care:

Consider using silk hair scrunchies and silk pillowcases to minimize breakage and damage when you sleep.

If you like to shower in the evenings, using a microfiber hair towel like this one from Aquis can help speed up the drying process.

Protection your hair:

If you're exposed to harsh weather or pollution, using a protective spray or serum can help shield your hair from damage.

Also don’t forget to apply SPF to your scalp!
