A Night at The Maker Hotel

When it comes to dreamy, bespoke hotels, few have nailed the aesthetic quite as well as The Maker Hotel in Hudson, NY.

The Maker opened its doors in 2020, and is now a staple of Warren Street in one of upstate New York’s most charming towns.

Hudson is just a two hour train ride from New York City and feels like its own little cozy world away from the busy city.

Back in March, Andrew and I were looking to do a weekend trip just to get out of town and we ended up grabbing dinner at The Maker Restaurant.

After just a few minutes inside the space, I kept thinking about how much my mom would love it as well and we ended up booking a stay for her birthday over the summer.

Read on to learn more about the history of the hotel and its owners, all of the spaces on the property and my thoughts on the hotel after a one night stay.

Who owns The Maker Hotel?

The Maker is founded by Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg who are also the founders of Fresh Beauty. Their beauty products are inspired by natural ingredients like strawberry, black tea and soy.

Their love for beauty and nature also shines through in The Maker as a holistic brand that goes beyond just a hotel.

The Maker brand also encompasses a fragrance line, bedding and blankets, tableware and more.

About The Maker Hotel

The Maker is located in the historic Georgian Mansion building in Hudson, New York and the hotel features 11 guest rooms, a restaurant, a café and even a swanky lounge in the former carriage house.

Each room is carefully designed and decorated by the co-founders.

We were told by the hotel staff that the art on the walls of the property ranges from original prints made by famous artists to pieces found on the side of the road.

Upon checking in we were ushered into the library where we were given a coffee while our bags were taken to our room.

The Library features an eclectic collection of books (as the name would suggest) ranging from history books, to biographies, to novels, art books and more.

All of the decor, art and accent pieces seemed to flow so well together and felt to me like something that could only be curated by someone with a remarkable eye for design.

My review of the hotel

Ever since it opened, I’ve been wanting to stay at this hotel. When Andrew and I visited Hudson in March of this year, I insisted on having dinner at the restaurant.

We sat in the conservatory and shared a bottle of wine and a few delicious appetizers before indulging in our entrees.

From the taste to the presentation, everything about the meal was so good.

We loved it so much and I knew my mom would appreciate it as well, so in June she and I made plans to stay overnight for her birthday.

We stayed in The Writer room (perfect for my mom and I—both writers!) and we dined at the restaurant for dinner and the cafe for breakfast.

This 450 square foot space features the original oak fireplace and built-in bookcases from the 1800’s. There were cozy armchairs and through the archway we found the bedroom and bathroom.

The bathroom also had a beautiful massive mirror, antique limestone heated floors and a rainfall shower.

I will note that rooms at The Maker are not cheap—they range from around $500 a night to over $1,000 a night depending on the size and features of the room.

We were able to stay for one night on a Thursday, but I believe if you want to stay for a weekend you will need to book your room for both Friday and Saturday.

In the morning we were about to venture out for coffee and when we opened our door there was the sweetest surprise!

We found a woven bag hanging on our door containing a carafe of hot coffee, biscotti and a copy of that day’s New York Times—talk about attention to detail!

Instead of leaving the room we turned on the fire and did the crossword together over coffee.

As a bonus, hotel guests get access to the hotel’s fragrance library.

This cabinet is tucked in a hallway on the second floor and it features vintage perfumes that the co-founders have been collecting for years.

Guests are encouraged to grab a quick spritz before heading out for the day or evening.

The Maker Restaurant

I’m not alone in thinking that this dining experience makes The Maker restaurant one of the best restaurants in Hudson.

The Maker Restaurant is all about Chef Alex’s fresh take on upstate Italian food.

Set in a glass conservatory surrounded by greenery, the vibe is as good as the food.

The seasonal menu highlights simple, top-notch local ingredients using regional Italian cooking techniques for a delightful dining experience.

When I went with Andrew in March, we shared a pasta to start and then he ordered the octopus.

In June, I was influenced by my last visit and ordered the octopus for myself and my mom got the burger.

We split a pasta for an appetizer and shared a bottle of crisp, white wine.

I also wanted to note that I had the same lovely waitress both times I visited who was super attentive.

The Maker Café

Inspired by Europe’s most alluring cafes, this day time spot is ready to keep you fueled all day.

Whether it's amazing coffee, freshly baked breads and pastries from Bartlett House, or classic brunch cocktails like a mimosa or bloody mary, they’ve got you covered.

The menu is full of delicious sandwiches, salads, and soups that are perfect to enjoy there or take on the go.

I tried the avocado toast and breakfast sandwich along with a chai latte and both were delicious.

The way I could truly spend all day working from here…

The Maker Lounge

Tucked inside a revamped 19th-century carriage house, The Lounge is a cozy cocktail bar with leather walls and soaring ceilings.

Whether you're sipping drinks by the hand-carved fireplace, grabbing a seat at the stunning bar, or hanging out on the patio, it’s the perfect spot to vibe.

The menu is packed with craft cocktails, wines, and local beers, plus a tasty lineup of savory bites.

The first time I visited The Lounge with Andrew we each had a post-dinner glass of wine.

When I went with my mom, I encountered a drink that would become my ONE complaint about our time at the hotel.

I ordered my go-to cocktail: an extra dirty vodka martini with three olives.

As you may be able to tell from the photos…the olives were tri-color, still contained the pits, and maybe worst of all, were sunk at the bottom of the glass.

No skewer in sight. My heart nearly broke!

This presentation was a major flop in my eyes (and I had to ask for something to fish them out) but this could be easily salvaged going forward with pitted green olives and cute skewers.

The Maker fragrances

As I mentioned, The Maker was created by the founders of Fresh Beauty so it should come as no surprise that the hotel also has its own fragrance collection!

Whether you want to spray a luxe eau de parfum or light a sultry-smelling candle, The Maker scents are available in both forms.

The co-founders created fragrances inspired by their travels and they are vegan, cruelty-free and genderless, so anyone can take advantage of the scents.

I was able to test a few of them and honestly couldn’t choose a favorite. These would make a great gift!

The Gymnasium

The one area of The Maker I haven’t explored yet is The Gymnasium which looks so beautiful, even Equinox is probably jealous.

According to Lev, it’s inspired by Moulin Rouge and the Ringling Brothers…say less!

With Polish chandeliers and sconces, the attention to detail of the design still comes through in the gymnasium.

A punching bag from the 1930’s and aerial silks evoke an old school vintage circus vibe and I love that there’s a true element of FUN in this space, since sometimes people dread their daily workout.

The pool

Even though we visited during June, we had a day of sightseeing planned for Saturday and it ended up raining on Sunday so we didn’t get to use the pool. We did, however have a lovely glass of wine nearby it outside.

The pool area is for hotel guests only and it looked lovely! Hopefully we can experience it some other time.

Overall thoughts

Since I was able to visit in the spring and the summer, I can definitely confirm that this was a fantastic place to spend a weekend no matter the season.

Is it expensive? Yes.

But listen—I truly felt we got a lot of bang for our buck when I consider the atmosphere, the friendly staff and the extra attention to detail.

I can’t recommend staying at The Maker enough, especially for a special occasion! As Tom Haverford would say, “treat yo self.”
