8 Photoshoot Props You Probably Already Have

When I was a magazine editor I remember that the photo department would always come up with super creative concepts for photo shoots. Models could have candy glued to their faces or they could be wearing a haute couture dress at an old school bowling alley and biting into a hot dog.

At the beginning of April, once I realized I wasn’t going to be able to shoot with my photographer friends anytime soon, I started searching my brain for photoshoot props ideas to have on hand in case I needed to take some photos for social media.

As a fashion and beauty blogger I typically reach for accessories like handbags and beauty products when taking photos but I wanted to push myself even a little bit further.

Props enhance your creativity and can give you more ideas for poses and different ways to interact with the camera and your surroundings when taking photos.

  1. Branches or leaves from outside

  2. A piece of paper

  3. Hand mirror (so many ways to get creative with this!

  4. Books with cool covers

  5. Magazines or newspapers

  6. Barrettes or other accessories

  7. Beauty products

  8. Notebooks and pens

Consider your location when choosing props and think about whether you want the props to pair with the location or go in the opposite direction.

For example, if you were taking photos at a beautiful five star resort a big floppy hat and a glass of lemonade might be obvious props but if you hand the model pool floaties it instantly becomes more playful.

Even mundane objects can become magical as props when used creatively. If you want to try something different try approaching your shoot with an editorial eye. Flip through some old fashion magazines for inspiration or try searching on Pinterest for ideas.
