3 Midi Skirts Styles to Add to Cart

Few things make me feel like a real adult more than wearing an outfit that features midi skirts.
Personally I’m a fan of wearing midi skirts for all sorts of occasions.
I love that I can dress them down by pairing them with my favorite graphic tee and some sneakers, or I can dress them up with a silky top and a low heel.
Now when it comes to the art of styling a midi skirt I really think it depends on which silhouette you’re talking about.
If the skirt is more high-waisted, it could pair nicely with a cropped sweater and some tights in the winter.
Or if the skirt is lower slung, maybe an oversized graphic tee is the way to go.
Whatever your style is, a midi skirt can help elevate your wardrobe since it’s an easy piece you can turn to when you’re not sure what to wear.
There are three types of midi skirts that I wear in frequent rotation in my closet, as well as some other styles that I’ve been eyeing that I’ll chat you through today.
Plus, I’ll share my best midi skirt styling tips if this is a new-to-you item so you can get dressed with confidence.
3 midi skirts styles you should buy
Silk midi skirt
When I picture a midi skirt in my head, this is the first style that comes to mind.
Having a silk or satin midi skirt in your wardrobe is honestly the ultimate style hack because it works across seasons and you can dress it up or dress it down.
You can stick with neutral colors like creams, browns or blacks or you can pick a fun pattern to add some variety and spice to any look (famously a leopard print midi skirt was all the rage in 2018).
I would also try as much as you can to look for a bias cut silk midi skirt because I feel like these look so beautiful on!
Satin is more affordable, but can sometimes cling in odd spots.
Pleated midi skirt
Another chic silhouette to consider adding to your rotation is the pleated midi skirt.
A pleated skirt almost mimics a beautiful triangle shape and adds that geometric element to your outfit.
I also love that you can play with different fabrics—here, for example, I have a cream colored chiffon one from Sézane that I love.
But you could also opt for a more playful vibe with a metallic fabric (so cute for holiday especially!)
Denim midi skirt
When I first placed the order for my denim midi skirt I wasn’t quite sure if I had just made a mistake or not.
It felt like I was either going to love or hate it on me.
However I ended up being happily surprised by having this skirt in my wardrobe rotation.
It really does strike the perfect balance between the sophisticated pencil silhouette with the slit and the casual nature of denim.
Other midi skirt styles to consider
- Cotton—this is giving Miley Stewart summer slash Taylor Swift debut era. A cotton midi skirt with some eyelet details feels very country chic and would look adorable paired with a plain tank top.
- Lace—if you like taking risks with your style, I think that a sheer lace skirt could be so fun to style. Wear it with a bodysuit or some mini shorts and let the see-through style speak for itself.
- Leather—if you’re reading this post between the months of August and November, I am going to implore you to consider a leather midi skirt. Whether you go for a more full A-line silhouette or a pencil skirt, this fabric adds edge to any outfit.
Best midi skirts styling tips

Find the right shoe
- I think that when in doubt, a midi skirt pairs nicely with a either a kitten heel, ballet flat or low top sneaker.
- Those are the two go-to’s for sure. But you may try playing with a strappy heel that comes further up your shin, an ankle boot, or even tall boots that hide under the hem.
Balance proportions
- Like I mentioned in the intro, I would choose your top depending where the top of the skirt sits on your waist.
- If you have a skirt that rests on your hips, you may want a longer fabric to stretch over your stomach. If the skirt is high rise, you may choose to pair it with something cropped so you can wear your midi skirt without feeling frumpy or like you’re being overstimulated by too much fabric.
Think in layers
- The great thing about midi skirts is that you can style them across seasons.
- For fall and winter consider what jacket you might wear with a midi skirt–you could opt for a long-line coat or go for a more cropped silhouette. You can also layer tights under a midi skirt in the winter months.

Still debating whether or not a midi skirt would make sense in your wardrobe?
One way to try it out without buying something new is to layer an item over a midi dress.
You could do this with a long sleeve t-shirt, an oversized graphic tee, or even a sweater in the colder months.
You can use a belt to mimic the top layer being tucked in and get a feel for what a midi skirt would look like this way.
